In August, call a family meeting to discuss your estate plan/will, and follow it up with a fun event like a dinner or outing.

Keep the discussion brief. Let your family know you’ve taken time to put your affairs in order, and you want them to be aware of your plans. Explain what documents have been drafted, why they are important to you and the family, and where they can be located.

Remember that estate planning is not just about death; it’s also about life, who we love and what is important to us. This discussion can be a good opportunity to share with your children and/or grandchildren some of the principles that guided you in your decisions (such as your philanthropic plans, funds set aside for education, and so forth).
